MARION ROGERS, 92; WAS PIONEER IN UNIVERSITY PHYSICAL EDUCATION - The Boston Globe (Boston, MA)

Marion E. Rogers of Lynn, who helped establish physical educationdepartments at the University of Maine at Orono and otherinstitutions, died Friday in a nursing home. She was 92.

Ms. Rogers was born in Lynn. A 1925 graduate of Lynn English HighSchool, she received a bachelor's degree in physical education fromBoston University's Sargent College. She also received a master'sdegree in psychology from the University of Maine at Orono and adoctorate in physical education from New York University. She latertaught at Glassboro State College in New Jersey.

Ms. Rogers helped establish the physical education department atthe University of Maine in the 1930s and became department head in1951. She is also credited with bringing field hockey to Maine andestablishing the Northern and Southern Maine Official Boards.

She received numerous awards for her work in the field of physicaleducation, including the Bangor Daily News Sports Award forOutstanding Contributions to Women's Athletics and PhysicalEducation, induction into the NEWS Sports Hall of Fame in 1959, andinduction into the University of Maine at Orono's Athletic Hall ofFame in 1992.

She was a communicant of St. Pius V Church, and enjoyed gardeningand reading.

She leaves a sister, Dorothy M., and two sisters-in-law, Catherineand Gertrude, all of Lynn; and 26 nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be said Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius VChurch. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
